Interactive Reports
The interactive Microsoft Power BI reports provide direct access to the evolving mycological record of Intermountain Idaho, integrating historical collections, contemporary field observations, DNA-supported species concepts, photographs, and related reference materials within a unified regional framework.
Designed for both field and research use, the reports can be explored by species, collector, date, season, locality, county, elevation, family, or broader taxonomic group. Seasonal filters—such as spring fungi, corals, cups, and other field-relevant categories—can help narrow identification possibilities during forays and specimen review.
Species names may be entered directly into the search fields, where historical synonyms and nomenclatural updates are cross-referenced against current taxonomy. Each species concept may include accepted authorship, representative photographs, provisional or field-oriented working names, and the presence or absence of associated DNA data. This allows users to quickly determine whether a collection is already genetically documented, helping guide voucher selection and sequencing priorities.
The reports may also be used in the opposite direction: when a species is already represented by multiple local sequences, existing molecular coverage can help identify where additional sequencing may be unnecessary, allowing effort to be focused on poorly documented taxa.
Multiple reports may be opened simultaneously for side-by-side comparison, and supporting resources—including downloadable DNA sequence files and external references—are available where applicable.
Getting Started
• Start with the filters
Each report includes filter panels (slicers) across the top. Selections may be made from drop-down menus or by typing directly into the search fields.
• Select multiple values
Use Ctrl + Click to select more than one item within the same filter. Multiple filters may also be combined to progressively narrow the dataset.
• Filters interact with one another
As selections are made, available choices in other filters automatically adjust to reflect matching records. This allows rapid exploration of taxonomic, ecological, and molecular relationships within the dataset.
• Clear individual filters
Each filter includes an eraser symbol that clears the current selection for that field without resetting the entire report.
• Sort the data tables
Click any column header to sort ascending or descending. Use Shift + Click on a second column to apply a secondary sort.
• Watch the record count
A running record count in the upper-left corner updates automatically as filters are applied, showing the number of matching records.
• Species report
The Species report includes synonym-aware name searches, DNA presence indicators, and links to representative photographs where available. The Synonymy and DNA filters are especially useful when evaluating species concepts or planning voucher collections.
• DNA report
The DNA report allows sequences to be explored by family, genus, species, collector, and other attributes. Selecting a family first will often reduce the available genera and sequences to a more manageable subset before downloading FASTA files.
• Use molecular coverage strategically
Sequence counts can help identify both poorly documented taxa that may benefit from additional sampling, and species already represented by strong local molecular coverage.
• Collection trends and historical visual summaries
The Collections report includes a second page with visual summaries of the regional record, including collections by year, collections by year and source, documented type collections through time, and DNA-supported voucher collections by year. These views provide a quick historical perspective on collecting activity, taxonomic discovery, and the growth of molecular documentation across Intermountain Idaho.
